Update from Haiti
Hello my fellow Rotarians!
I hope you are all enjoying these last days of summer. It has been a busy time for us both in Canada and in Haiti and while i receive weekly updates on all activities, I have been a little remiss in forwarding them to interested parties such as yourselves.
In Haiti, we are regularly evaluating the Mobile Clinic Extension pilot. Now that we are in the last two months of this program, we are aware of varying responses largely due to the challenges of people to grasp the “insurance” concept. We have begun to ramp up the education/information of patients.
When the medical staff arrived in Delis this past week, they anticipated receiving 60-70 patients which is what they can usually manage in a day.. There were more. By the end of day they saw a total of 82 patients. It was a record. The patients came from many different localities with some walking more than 2 hours to be treated. The pcH technician that travelled with the team noted that the service was fast and precise and expressed his new appreciation for how dedicated and professional the team conducted themselves. He also realized how poor these people are. Most of them could barely afford the very low fees we ask of them. The pcH technician was present to reinforce the cooperative-based health concept and reports that many are ready to be registered. A more intense meeting was planned for the following Saturday.
More patients could have been seen but by 7 pm it was dark with a three hour drive home and the staff were weary after a 12 hour day.
Short seminars are conducted at the beginning of the clinic on the prevention of high blood pressure and urinary track infection which are the most frequent cases presented in previous clinics. During this time, the nurses call the patients to check their vital signs.
There were some unique cases seen. In the third photo is a woman who suffers from severe stomach cramps to the point she was afraid to eat as every time she eats, she vomits. Medical observation and a lab exam revealed she suffers from Helocobacteria Pillory and intestinal infection. The patient is being treated for both illnesses and educated on her diet regimen.
The fourth photo is that of a baby boy with 101 degree fever and media otitis. The lab exam revealed that he suffers from typhoid. Fortunately we travel with a well stocked pharmacy and have all necessary medication for his treatment. The mother was given our number to call in two days to report the state of the child. As there is access to internet in this particular area, the mother is able to do a video call through WhatsApp.
We had another record day in another area last week (103 patients) so will get that little report to you next...
